The Hollywood sign was not meant to be permanent, and it deteriorated over time. In 1978, a public campaign to restore the landmark was initiated by Alice Cooper, shock rocker extraordinaire (he donated a missing O). As a result of his prompting, the Hollywood Chamber took action, and other donors came forward, including Gene Autry and Hugh Hefner.

For the creative set, the California Institute of the Arts is well worth checking out. Founded by Walt Disney and located in the quaint Los Angeles suburb of Valencia, the school is the nation's first to offer BFAs and MFAs in both performing and visual arts. Its location offers affordable housing options and a respite from big city living.
